SIOUX FALLS – Citigroup celebrated a significant milestone in South Dakota – surpassing the $20 million mark in charitable giving to nonprofit organizations across South Dakota over the past 25 years – and presented $250,000 in new community development grants to four nonprofits at its annual grant awards luncheon Tuesday.

Representatives of about 75 nonprofits in the Sioux Falls area and across South Dakota attended the luncheon at the Holiday Inn City Centre. Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, who is also executive director of Children’s Home Society, was the featured speaker.

When he visited Sioux Falls in April to help celebrate Citibank’s 25th anniversary in South Dakota, Citigroup Chairman & CEO Chuck Prince announced the creation of the $1 million Citigroup South Dakota Community Development Innovation Fund. Beginning in 2006, grant awards totaling $250,000 will be awarded annually for four years from the Citigroup Foundation to highly effective South Dakota-based community development organizations offering programs that serve low- and moderate-income communities and individuals.

The four nonprofits that received Innovation Fund grants Tuesday were:

South Dakota Rural Enterprise Inc. SDREI received a $75,000 grant to design and implement a new $500,000 micro-enterprise program in five regions across South Dakota, and $25,000 to design and implement a program for New Market Tax Credits in South Dakota and North Dakota.

Inter-Lakes Community Action Inc. Inter-Lakes received a $75,000 grant to design and implement a Mutual Self-Help Homeownership program for new homes that will be located on tribal lands of the Lake Traverse Reservation in northeastern South Dakota, and a $25,000 grant to expand the Tenant Education and Self-Sufficiency Program and create a new Individual Development Account (IDA) program, both in the Sioux Falls area.

West River Foundation. West River Foundation received $25,000 to revitalize neighborhoods through renovations of homes in the Rapid City area.

Neighborhood Housing Services of the Black Hills. The organization received $25,000 for revitalization of the Lead/Deadwood area through small business development. A youth financial education program will be implemented to create small businesses that will renovate homes for elderly people in the area.

“At Citi, we are committed to making South Dakota communities better because we are there,” said Kendall E. Stork, President & CEO of Citibank (South Dakota), N.A. “We’re excited about the impact these grants from the Citigroup South Dakota Community Development Innovation Fund will have in improving lives across the state.”

Citi also announced that it had met and slightly surpassed its 2007 Sioux Empire United Way fundraising goal of $808,722, and also surprised 10 nonprofits in attendance by drawing their names out of a Santa hat to receive $1,000 grants in recognition of Citibank’s 25th anniversary in South Dakota. The nonprofits were: Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota; Kilian Community College; Girls Scouts of Minn-Ia-Kota; Sioux Empire Community Theatre; Multi-Cultural Center of Sioux Falls; South Dakota State University-Flandreau Indian School Success Academy; South Dakota Voices for Children; DakotAbilities; Home Ownership Assistance Program; and Joe Foss High School.
